Pet Vaccinations play a vital role in protecting your pet from serious and potentially life-threatening diseases.
At The Village Vet, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Every vaccination plan is tailored to your pet’s age, lifestyle, and risk factors, so they receive exactly what they need. Nothing more, nothing less!
Vaccinations are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your pet from diseases. Even pets that seem healthy or live mostly indoors can still be at risk.

Why Vaccinations Are Important for Your Pet
Does my pet really need vaccinations?
Yes, vaccinations play a critical role in protecting your pet’s health and the wider pet community.
Diseases like parvovirus in dogs or feline panleukopenia in cats can be severe, highly contagious, and in some cases fatal. Vaccination significantly reduces this risk and helps prevent outbreaks locally.
Even pets that don’t mix often with others can still be exposed through environments, surfaces, or indirect contact.
How often should my pet be vaccinated?
This depends on their age and lifestyle, but most pets require regular vaccinations to maintain protection.
- Puppies and kittens: a series of vaccinations early in life
- Adult pets: typically annual boosters
- Higher-risk pets: may require additional protection depending on lifestyle
We’ll guide you through a schedule that’s appropriate for your pet, rather than applying a standard approach.
Do indoor pets still need vaccinations?
In most cases, yes.
Even indoor pets can be exposed to viruses carried on clothing, shoes, or through brief contact with other animals. Some diseases are also highly resilient in the environment.
Vaccinations help ensure your pet remains protected, even with a low-risk lifestyle.
What happens during a vaccination appointment?
A vaccination visit is more than just an injection. It’s also an important health check.
Health check before vaccination
Before any vaccine is given, we perform a full physical examination to ensure your pet is healthy and ready for vaccination.
Tailored vaccination plan
We consider:
- Your pet’s age and medical history
- Lifestyle (indoor vs outdoor, social exposure)
- Local disease risks (important here on the North Shore)
Vaccine administration
Vaccines are given quickly and safely, with minimal discomfort.
Post-vaccination guidance
We’ll let you know what to expect after the visit, including:
- Mild, normal reactions
- When to monitor more closely
- When to contact us
What vaccines does my dog need?
We generally recommend the C5 vaccination, which protects against:
- Parvovirus – a severe gastrointestinal disease
- Distemper – affects multiple body systems
- Infectious hepatitis – impacts the liver
- Bordetella & Parainfluenza – causes kennel cough
We also recommend vaccination against Leptospirosis, which is now considered a core vaccine for many dogs.
What vaccines does my cat need?
We recommend F3 vaccinations, which protect against:
- Feline Panleukopenia – a life-threatening viral disease
- Feline Calicivirus – causes respiratory disease
- Feline Herpesvirus – associated with cat flu
For cats that go outdoors or are at higher risk, we may recommend:
- FIV vaccination – spread through cat fights
- FeLV vaccination – a serious viral disease spread through close contact
We’ll only recommend additional vaccines where there is a clear benefit for your pet.
Are vaccinations safe for pets?
Yes, vaccinations are very safe and are carefully selected based on your pet’s individual needs.
Most pets experience no side effects. Occasionally, mild reactions such as slight lethargy or tenderness at the injection site can occur and usually resolve quickly.
If you ever have concerns, we’re always here to help.

What Pet Owners Say
Mara Spessot
Love the feeling of joining an extended family who remembers your name, your pet’s name and cares. Such a friendly local practice and vibe.

We cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful team at The Village Vet. Our Ruby has complex medical needs, and the care, compassion, and professionalism shown to her has been nothing short of outstanding.
In particular, Elle Burton Bradley, Taryn and Martine have been incredible – not only in the way they’ve looked after Ruby with such skill and kindness, but also in the way they’ve supported us as her owners through every step. Their patience, empathy, and dedication have given us enormous confidence and comfort, knowing Ruby is in the very best hands.
It’s rare to find such a combination of expertise and genuine care, and we are so grateful for all they continue to do.

We’re so grateful to The Village Pymble Vet for their care and compassion during our beloved dog Dyson’s final days. Dr Anabel Thomas was incredibly kind, empathetic, and professional — her clear communication and gentle support meant the world to us. Thank you, Dr Thomas, and the entire team. You are a true credit to your profession.

Not only is the care and treatment provided on the day at The Village Vet always exceptional, the after care is amazing too. There’s always a text message or phone call to see how my dogs are doing post treatment.
Jacinta Mikus
I was recommended your services by a close friend and within our first appointment, I had more answers and information than I had managed to gather in the last year. The care by our vet and the rest of the team was amazing and I so glad to have found you!

Thank you to the incredible team at The Village Vet Pymble.
Both of our dogs have visited several of the lovely vet staff over the years but I’d like to send an extra special thank you to Elle.
She has been absolutely incredible with her kind, thoughtful & expert approach to managing the needs of both of our dogs but in particular our gorgeous 15 1/2 year old Bonnie in recent times.
Going above & beyond one afternoon when she should’ve been going home meant the world to us & I believe gave us more time with her.
I’d like to thank Elle for her genuine compassion for not only Bonnie but also our family. You definitely get to see us when we are most vulnerable & you managed it beautifully.
Your follow up after her passing & on-going advice for Max’s welfare is much appreciated.
Thank you again, we are truly grateful.

Beau Vella
Have been going here for well over 10 years and wouldn’t trust anyone else with my fur children. Friendly, extremely professional and knowledgeable.
David Bradbury
Wonderful people! My cat was in there for a week for treatment and I got a text message EVERY day with an update. Plus they sent me a picture. They did not need to do that and it completely put my mind at ease.
Exceptional experience.
Paul Gilbertson
Our two Burmese kittens had a bad bout of diarrhoea and one wasn’t responding to the treatment. Dr Josie was in charge and worked really hard to find the underlying cause. She did find it and even after it was clear that the treatment was working she would ring every day to check up on our little Kira. It was very clear that she cared, as well as being a very good vet. It was also clear that the wider team was working with Josie to discover the problem. Once again 5 stars for the Village Vet team.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Vaccinations
Most pets require vaccinations at least once a year, but the exact schedule depends on their age, lifestyle, and risk factors. Puppies and kittens need a series early in life, while adult and senior pets typically have annual or tailored booster plans.
Yes, in most cases. Even indoor pets can be exposed to viruses through surfaces, clothing, or brief contact with other animals. Vaccinations help ensure they remain protected.
Most dogs are vaccinated with a C5 vaccine, which protects against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and kennel cough. We may also recommend leptospirosis vaccination depending on your dog’s lifestyle and local risk.
Most cats receive an F3 vaccine, which protects against feline panleukopenia, calicivirus, and herpesvirus (cat flu). Additional vaccines may be recommended for cats with higher exposure risk.
Yes. Pets with higher exposure risk may benefit from additional protection. For example, outdoor cats may require FIV or FeLV vaccinations, and some dogs may need extra coverage depending on their lifestyle.
Yes, vaccinations are very safe and carefully selected based on your pet’s individual needs. Most pets experience no side effects, although some may be slightly tired or sore for a short time after their visit.
Vaccinations greatly reduce the risk of disease, but no vaccine provides 100% protection. However, vaccinated pets who do become unwell are typically much less severely affected.
If your pet is overdue, we can assess their situation and recommend the best way to get them back on track safely. In some cases, a booster or restart of the schedule may be needed.
Mild tiredness or slight swelling at the injection site can occur and usually resolves quickly. If you notice anything more significant or unusual, contact us for advice.
Before any vaccine is given, we perform a full health check to ensure your pet is well. We then tailor the vaccination to their needs and provide guidance on ongoing care and prevention.
