When it comes to keeping your pet happy and healthy, prevention really is everything.

Most health problems we see in dogs and cats don’t happen overnight. They develop slowly, often without obvious signs. By the time symptoms appear, the condition may already be quite advanced.

Routine pet health checks are how we stay ahead of this.

Why do pets need regular health checks if they seem healthy?

Because many conditions don’t show obvious signs early on.

Things like dental disease, arthritis, weight gain, and internal health issues can develop quietly. Pets are also very good at hiding discomfort, so what looks “normal” at home isn’t always the full picture.

Regular check-ups allow us to detect these changes early and put a plan in place before they progress.

How often should my pet have a check-up?

For most pets, at least once a year is recommended.

However, many pets benefit from more frequent visits depending on their age and lifestyle:

Puppies and kittens: multiple visits during their early development
Adult pets: yearly health checks
Senior pets (around 7+ years): every 6 months

Pets age much faster than we do, which means health changes can happen quickly. Regular visits help us stay ahead of those changes. These regular visits also help build your pet’s confidence at the vet, especially with our Fear Free approach.

What to Expect During Routine Health Checks

A routine health check at The Village Vet is a thorough, nose-to-tail assessment of your pet’s overall health.

Step 1: Full Physical Examination

Our vets carefully assess your pet’s:

Eyes, ears, and teeth
Heart and lungs
Skin and coat condition
Joints and mobility
Weight and overall body condition

Step 2: Lifestyle & Behaviour Assessment

We’ll talk through your pet’s:

Diet and nutrition
Exercise and daily routine
Behaviour or personality changes

These conversations are often where we pick up early clues that something isn’t quite right.

Step 3: Diagnostic Testing (If Needed)

If we identify anything that needs further investigation, we may recommend:

Bloodwork
Urine analysis
Parasite screening
Imaging (X-rays or ultrasound)

Because we have advanced diagnostics on-site, we can often investigate and act quickly.

Step 4: Personalised Health Plan

Every pet is different. Based on what we find, we’ll guide you on:

Vaccinations
Tick and flea prevention (especially important here on the North Shore)

What are the early signs my pet might need a check-up sooner?

Even if your pet isn’t due for a routine visit, it’s worth booking in if you notice:

Drinking more or less than usual

How routine care changes as your pet gets older

Your pet’s needs naturally change over time, which is why regular check-ups become even more important as they age.

Young pets: focus on growth, development, vaccinations, and behaviour
Adult pets: maintaining weight, dental health, and preventative care
Senior pets: monitoring for arthritis, organ function, and chronic conditions

On the day of the surgery, they kept us updated with calls, letting us know how everything was going. They also followed up the next day to check on our puppy’s recovery and provided helpful advice.

Our puppy recovered quickly, and one of the best parts was their recommendation of a post-surgery suit instead of the traditional Elizabethan collar. Since our pup was in between sizes for the collar—too small for one, too big for another—it kept slipping off or didn’t provide enough protection. The surgery suit, with its cross-back belts, worked perfectly! It kept her wound protected while still allowing her to move comfortably and go to the toilet as usual.

Such a great experience overall—caring staff, excellent communication, and great post-surgery care. Highly recommend The Village Vet!

Why does my pet need a check-up if they seem fine?

Because many health conditions develop gradually without obvious symptoms. Routine checks help detect problems early, before they affect your pet’s comfort or quality of life.

How often should my pet have a health check?

Most pets should be seen at least once a year, but senior pets or those with ongoing conditions often benefit from check-ups every 6 months.

Do routine health checks include vaccinations?

Vaccinations may be given during a visit if your pet is due, but a health check is a full assessment of their overall health, not just vaccinations.

What happens if the vet finds a problem?

If we detect anything concerning, we’ll explain what it means, recommend any further tests if needed, and guide you through the next steps clearly and calmly.

Are blood or urine tests always necessary?

Not always. We only recommend additional testing when it’s clinically relevant, such as for early disease detection or if something unusual is found during the exam.

Can I bring more than one pet to the same appointment?

In many cases, yes. Just let us know when booking so we can allow enough time to give each pet a thorough check.

How can I monitor my pet’s health at home?

Keep an eye on changes in appetite, weight, energy levels, behaviour, and mobility. If anything changes, even subtly, it’s worth having them checked.
