Tick & Flea Protection for North Shore Pets
Protecting your pet from ticks, fleas, and other harmful parasites is essential for their health and comfort.
In Sydney, parasites don’t have an off-season. This means year-round tick and flea prevention is crucial.
At The Village Vet, we provide tailored parasite prevention plans for pets across Pymble, Killara and Sydney’s North Shore, helping protect your pet from fleas, ticks, and serious conditions like tick paralysis.

Does my pet need tick and flea prevention all year round?
Yes. In Sydney’s climate, ticks and fleas are present year-round, even during cooler months.
Consistent prevention is essential to protect your pet from serious health risks such as tick paralysis, flea allergies, and parasite infestations. Missing doses can leave your pet vulnerable, so maintaining regular protection is key.
How often should I give tick and flea treatment?
The frequency depends on the product used.
Many treatments are given monthly, or every 3 months; newer options are now available that provide long-lasting protection with a single dose.
At The Village Vet, we offer advanced options such as Bravecto Quantum, which provides up to 12 months of tick and flea protection for dogs, helping remove the risk of missed doses.
We’ll recommend the best option based on your pet and lifestyle.
Does my indoor pet still need tick and flea protection?
Yes. Even indoor pets can be exposed to fleas and ticks.
Parasites can be brought into the home on clothing, shoes, or other pets. Fleas in particular can quickly establish themselves in carpets, bedding, and furniture.
Indoor cats and dogs still benefit from regular protection.
Are dog tick products safe to use on cats?
No. Many dog tick treatments are toxic to cats and can cause serious illness or even be fatal.
Always use products specifically designed for your pet’s species. If you’re unsure, our team can recommend safe and effective options.

Tick checks and home prevention
Medication is essential, but physical checks and home hygiene play an important role in protecting your pet.
How to check your pet for ticks
Run your hands over your pet daily, especially around:
- Head, muzzle, and ears (from the neck up is where ticks are most commonly found)
- Under the collar
- Chest, armpits, and belly
- Tail base and between toes
After bush walks or time outdoors, check your pet thoroughly.
What to do if you find a tick on your pet
If you find a tick on your pet, it should always be taken seriously.
Carefully remove the tick using a tick remover if you are confident doing so, but you should contact your vet as soon as possible for advice, especially if you are unsure how long the tick has been attached or what type it is.
Signs of tick paralysis can develop hours to days after attachment and may include:
- Weakness or wobbliness
- Vomiting or coughing
- Difficulty breathing
If you notice any of these signs, this is an emergency and your pet should be seen by a vet immediately.

I recently took Nashi my puppy to The Village Vet Team for a consultation, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the care and service we received. From the moment we walked in, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely caring about my dog’s well-being. The receptionist greeted us with a warm smile and made the check-in process smooth and easy.
What really stood out during our visit was how professional and calm the staff remained, despite a neighborhood emergency happening that day. While there was a lot of hustle and bustle in the clinic, the staff handled everything seamlessly. They made sure all patients were attended to with the same level of care and attention, and it was evident that they were working under pressure, yet still provided top-notch service.
The clinic itself was clean, bright, and well-organized, with a calming atmosphere. It was clear that the staff values the comfort and health of their patients, which put me at ease as a pet parent.
Overall, I’m so happy with the care my dog received and will definitely be returning for future visits. If you’re looking for a compassionate, professional, and warm environment for your pet, I highly recommend The Village Vet Team. Thank you to the whole team for making Nashi and my visit such a positive experience!

Thank you to the incredible team at The Village Vet Pymble.
Both of our dogs have visited several of the lovely vet staff over the years but I’d like to send an extra special thank you to Elle.
She has been absolutely incredible with her kind, thoughtful & expert approach to managing the needs of both of our dogs but in particular our gorgeous 15 1/2 year old Bonnie in recent times.
Going above & beyond one afternoon when she should’ve been going home meant the world to us & I believe gave us more time with her.
I’d like to thank Elle for her genuine compassion for not only Bonnie but also our family. You definitely get to see us when we are most vulnerable & you managed it beautifully.
Your follow up after her passing & on-going advice for Max’s welfare is much appreciated.
Thank you again, we are truly grateful.

We cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful team at The Village Vet. Our Ruby has complex medical needs, and the care, compassion, and professionalism shown to her has been nothing short of outstanding.
In particular, Elle Burton Bradley, Taryn and Martine have been incredible – not only in the way they’ve looked after Ruby with such skill and kindness, but also in the way they’ve supported us as her owners through every step. Their patience, empathy, and dedication have given us enormous confidence and comfort, knowing Ruby is in the very best hands.
It’s rare to find such a combination of expertise and genuine care, and we are so grateful for all they continue to do.

A wonderful experience from start to finish. Martine was so kind, patient, and knowledgeable, giving me lots of helpful advice about keeping my cat, Zebel healthy. She made both of us feel completely at ease. The receptionist was lovely, and the little freebies for Zebel were such a thoughtful touch. Highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for caring and professional veterinary care! 🐾
Bec Mitchell
Martine and her team are simply the best vets in Sydney. From their level of care and empathy to their knowledge and application of that knowledge. There is simply not another vet I would take my animal to. My heartfelt thanks to you all. Bec and Louis.

I can’t recommend The Village Vet highly enough. I took my dog here when she was suffering from heart disease, and thanks to their expert care, we were able to enjoy more precious, quality time together. The entire team went above and beyond — they were compassionate, professional, and genuinely cared for her wellbeing. It’s clear that every member of staff truly loves what they do and treats each patient as if they were their own. I’ll always be grateful for the kindness and dedication shown to both of us during such a difficult time.

The team at Pymble Vet were so amazing, in particular, Dr Elle who basically saved my puppy Lucy. Lucy was acting really unwell and Dr Elle knew right away what the problem was. She was so knowledgeable and explained the process really well. Definitely recommend Dr Elle!
