With so many conflicting opinions on pet diets, it can be difficult to know what’s best. Our team takes the guesswork out of nutritional planning, ensuring your pet receives a balanced, high-quality diet for optimal health.

Why Nutrition Matters for Your Pet

✅ Supports overall health – Good nutrition promotes a strong immune system, healthy weight, and longevity.
✅ Prevents diet-related health issues – Proper feeding can help avoid obesity, diabetes, and deficiencies.
✅ Tailored to individual needs – Every pet is different. We consider age, breed, and medical conditions when recommending diets.
✅ Helps maintain energy and digestion – The right diet ensures better digestion, fewer stomach issues, and more vitality.
✅ Better coat, skin, and fewer odours – High-quality food results in a shiny coat, reduced pet odour, and smaller, less frequent stools.

Common Pet Nutrition Questions Answered

Should I feed my pet home-cooked meals or commercial pet food?

While home-cooked meals can work, they must be properly balanced, especially for growing puppies and kittens. Commercial premium diets like Hills Science Diet and Prime100 are formulated with precise nutrient ratios to support healthy growth and development.

Should I buy a supermarket brand or a premium pet food?

Veterinarians typically feed their own pets premium brands like Hills Science Diet and Prime100 because they:

✔️ Contain high-quality, research-backed ingredients
✔️ Are highly digestible, meaning less waste (smaller poos!)
✔️ Provide complete and balanced nutrition for long-term health
✔️ Support healthy skin, a shiny coat, and strong immune function

At The Village Vet, we have taken the time to research the best nutritional options for pets, which is why we only stock vet-recommended brands in our Pet Food & Supplies Shop.

How often should I feed my pet?

  • Puppies (up to 4-6 months): 3 meals a day however this is breed dependant
  • Adult dogs: 1–2 meals per day
  • Kittens (up to 12 weeks old): 3 meals a day
  • Adult cats: Free feeding with dry biscuits or 2 set meals per day (to prevent overeating)

Should I feed my cat dry or wet food?

Cats are obligate carnivores and need a high-protein diet. A mix of premium dry and wet food is ideal. Cats that free-feed on dry biscuits should have portion control to prevent obesity and diabetes.

Are pet-grade minces safe?

Pet-grade minces may contain sulphite preservatives, which can cause thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency. We recommend limiting mince to no more than once every second day.

Is a premium dry food diet complete?

Yes! Hills Science Diet and Prime100 are formulated as complete diets, ensuring pets get all essential nutrients without additional supplements.
