Oncology and Chemotherapy
Oncology and Chemotherapy Treatment
Receiving a cancer diagnosis for your pet can be an emotional time.
The Village Vet staff are here to understand your concerns, give you treatment options and guide you through these difficult decisions. As a pet owner, it is important that you feel confident about making these decisions with all the knowledge to hand. Our qualified and caring staff will be with you throughout this journey to achieve the best possible health outcomes for your pet at every stage.
Dr Martine Perkins has a niche interest and expertise in Chemotherapy treatment for domestic pets. Our staff get very attached to our chemotherapy patients as we see the medication transform their lives.
How is Chemotherapy Used?
Chemotherapy can serve as the primary therapeutic approach for specific cancers, such as lymphoma, or it may be employed alongside other treatments like surgery and radiation therapy. In certain instances, chemotherapy plays a role in reducing the size of substantial tumours before surgical intervention or eliminating microscopic cancer cells that cannot be entirely removed through surgery. Following surgery for cancers with a high risk of spreading, chemotherapy may be administered to reduce the potential development of cancer in other areas of the body.
Chemotherapy is very different from what human patients experience and is well tolerated in our patients, extending their lifespan considerably. The method of administering medications varies depending on what your pet requires.
